treasure trail

I met trackers today
you know what they do
they look at dust and sand misplaced
because of someone walking through

so i asked them to look at me
to tell what tracks they see
if they could trace you across my skin
or wherever you took shelter in

afraid of the claw marks
spotted on my soul
they mumbled apologies
and moved along
– at least i know
that you indeed had been around
before you were no more

i smiled when i went to sleep that night
i knew i hadn’t dreamt you up
i knew that you had been here
and that we had shared a life

so now i cut along the spur
when in daunting midnight hours
once again i doubt our love that was
or when i doubt you’re waiting up above
