Conversations with a mother

they’ve grown
even since you’ve gone
they’ve grown so much

the roots they buried
they haven’t let go
not an inch of your love
they’ve missed

– tree trunks mightier than entire woodlands-
you might see some space
between where you left them
– the tree crowns sway –
and where they’ll be waiting
for your return
– the branches reach for the sky –

i say it’s no distance no time at all
squint and you’ll miss it
wander and you’ll run the danger of passing them
without noticing the change in landscapes

– a breeze through tangled hair –
Sometimes I wonder how
they’ve grown up
oh so much
– a leaf lands next to bare feet –

I wish they knew
you’ve been watching them
wondering that too
