sometimes you dive into your mind
a bottomless pool to pull you under
it’s when you start to drift away
I force you up
so that you’ll breathe in again

when you break through the surface
pupils diverted, lungs crushed
heart racing wildly
I know I am your safe haven you can sail into
I believe you know it, too

the thought of you drowning
suffocated by whirls
dragging you deep
it’s what keeps me waiting at this quiet port
pacing along the docks
the light house seeking out
to welcome you home
